I had my third day of training today from 8 am to 1 pm. I got through the Day 5 computer modules and then some.
Their computer training is very good. They really explain the cashier duties very well, such as, what chores we should do during slow periods. It is so different from my previous employer.
They invest a lot of energy into teaching us about produce. Produce comprises 30% of their sales, which is a lot more than other grocers.
I had to take a module on five different diet trends: Paleo, Plant Based, Organic, Keto and Gluten Free. That was very interesting.
Another module was on tare weights. Tare weight is the weight of the empty container the food product is in. Laws mandate that consumers do not have to pay for the packaging the food item comes in. I acquired yet more evidence that I’ve found my retail home. Customers are encouraged to bring in their own reusable containers for things that can be purchased in bulk. This would include prepared salads, like pasta or bean from the deli and nuts and other items. Upon arrival, customers give their reusable container to a cashier who weighs it. The cashier then puts the weight on a post it or writes it directly on the container with a Sharpie. That is so awesome. This practice wasn’t even going on in Portland, which in the 90’s, was one of the greenest cities in the country.
After my shift I got a couple of things. I was starving so, I got a small organic frozen pizza. I ate three quarters of it. I added a few slices of the Smoked Black Pepper Cheddar Tillamook cheese I purchased. It’s yummy.

I also pursued the red wines. I went to the Pinot Noir section. I didn’t find Rex Hill. I’d looked the night of my interview and it wasn’t there. I guess we don’t carry it. However, I did find another Oregon Pinot Noir from Erath, which I never tried when I lived out there. Maybe I can blow part of my stimulus money on a bottle. Of course, I have no idea when I’m getting that money but, it will probably be a paper check.

After discovering that all the 2021 calendars and appointment books were 75% off I allowed myself a treat. I got this $15 calendar for $4.

At this point, I am enjoying the job. There is a lot to learn and everyone is really nice. I feel comfortable with the management. Walmart got so bad I didn’t trust anyone in management anymore. Plus, Sprouts is exceptionally clean and it smells wonderful.
It’s just a much happier, calmer vibe.
